Mozambique is advancing a major clean energy project with the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project, a $5 billion initiative scheduled to begin construction by the end of 2024. The project aims to generate 1,500 MW of hydroelectric power, providing clean and affordable electricity. This initiative is a critical step toward addressing Africa’s energy poverty and supporting the transition to a sustainable energy future.
The project’s large scale demonstrates a commitment to leveraging the continent’s vast natural resources to meet growing energy demands and promote economic development. It also highlights the importance of multi-sector collaboration and private-public partnerships, which are seen as crucial for attracting investment and fostering innovation in Africa’s energy landscape. The World Bank has emphasized that access to “reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy is critical for powering economies, delivering essential services, and spurring job creation for Africa’s growing population”. The Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project is a direct response to this need, providing a foundational energy source that can support industrialization and urbanization.
